“See better. Read better. Learn better”

When its more than just glasses

The brain uses around 80% of information from vision for learning and processing information about the world around us.

If there are any factors that have interrupted the development of the visual pathways or the communication of the visual system to the brain, it can manifest in a wide range of symptoms. This is where we would like to help. If you notice that your vision is not quite right and find it difficult to see or read or learn or even play sports, but yet you have been told you have 20/20 (perfect) vision or your glasses are fine. Please come to us, we will do a deeper behavioural optometry assessment of the visual function using a wide range of techniques by our highly specialised behavioural optometrist. The results will then be analysed to provide a tailor-made solution to help with the visual processing in the areas of your concern(s).

We are a Hertfordshire and London based service. Typically, we love to look after people of all ages, including those with learning difficulties, individuals that are on the autism spectrum or have dyspraxia, sensory challenges, attention issues and dyslexia. There is no one too young or too old or too difficult for us, we endeavour to do our best for every person that comes to us.

WHAT IS BEHAVIOURAL OPTOMETRY?

Standard optometry looks at what letters you can see on a chart, whereas behavioural optometry takes things a step further and looks at the way your brain interprets what you are seeing. It is a multidisciplinary approach that incorporates the physical, neurological, and developmental aspects of vision and can therefore treat difficulties that standard optometry cannot.

Of the five senses, vision is the most dominant. Over 80% of learning occurs through the visual system, which means that even subtle issues can have a major impact on your efficiency and performance.

The great news is that once a Behavioural Optometrist has identified which parts of your visual system are not working efficiently, with practice and willingness, new visual skills can be quickly learnt and developed, regardless of age.

This is important especially if your quality of life is being effected by other vision problems that are not as evident in a standard eye test.

A specialist behavioural optometry assessment is carried out which includes checks for retained primitive reflexes and visual stress. Then depending on the results of the assessment, a highly individualised solution using involving regular vision therapy sessions may be recommended. Home vision therapy is also available where suitable and required.
